The integral approach is a module that combines multiple perspectives and merges them into a single comprehensive framework. Hence, with this general definition in mind, integral psychology is an approach that aims to comprehend human behavior and experience. The study inquires the very nature of human beings and also takes into account a wide range of knowledge at hand that can assist a therapist to understand the challenges faced by a client. This puts a therapist in a good position to effectively address these issues.

The following conditions exist as a result of the integral approach:

  • Increased life intimacy with self and others. This comes about through personal alienation and self-inquiry
  • Whole person education which completely transforms a person, including his profession
  • A totally changed society of people whose body and mind are fully integrated.

Such a peaceful environment is the kind of surroundings that the study of this program promotes. The education promotes an awakened life that results in a meaningful life and full of socially engaged action.

The Integral Psychology Concentration

The major states of consciousness are something that most people are familiar with. These are states such as dreaming, deep sleep and waking up. There are also altered states of consciousness and a wide variety of peak experiences. These are often triggered by intense incidences such as lovemaking or listening to music.

Each human has some point in life experienced these various levels of consciousness. They provide an individual with meaning and motivation. The different state of consciousness is the basic foundation of the line of approach in integral psychology. These cannot be ignored whether they are important or not.

The interesting thing about these various states is that all of them are temporary. No matter how experience seems to be exciting and fun, it will come and go. As a student of this study, one should be equipped to help a client realize this fact. It will help him better deal with various anxieties of life. The permanent stages of consciousness represent actual milestones in a clients’ life of growth and development. For example, once a child masters a language he has passed the linguistic stage and has permanent access to that language. A similar thing happens with the types of growths. Once a person reaches this stage of development, he can access the qualities that are associated with the particular stage any time he wishes to do so. He has greater intelligence, greater consciousness, and awareness.

Each of these stages represents the various levels of complexity. All these developmental levels form an important part of the normal events happening in life. The integral model works with a maxim of 10 stages of consciousness. The reason behind this number is that researchers have realized that when the stages are too many, it becomes difficult to effectively comprehend human behavior and attitude. On the other hand, when the levels are too low, they are vague. So balance is needed in this area.

Spiral dynamics is a stage that is often used in this module. It is based in the research of Clare Graves. However, a person is free to use the many other useful stages which he can adapt to his situation.

The makeup of an individual differs and all are unevenly developed. One may be highly developed in logical thinking but still poorly developed in emotional feelings. Others may have a high moral development but low cognitive development. On the other hand, a person may excel in emotional intelligence but cannot perform single math.

The Idea Of Multiple Intelligence

Humans have the ability to demonstrate a variety of intelligence such as cognitive intelligence, emotional intelligence, and musical intelligence. One may do well in all these areas but still not excel in other areas. A student pursuing the course should know how to reassure a client that this is not a bad thing itself. The ability of a person to realize where he excels the most is part of integral wisdom.

I these lines of development; these core questions are raised:

  • What do I need
  • Who am I?
  • How should we interact?
  • What is the right thing to do?
  • What concerns me the most?
  • How should we interact?
  • What am I aware of?

All these lines of thinking are connected to each other in one way or the other. However, they tend to have different rates of evolvement. Thus, a therapist can understand why a client may do well in a certain stage but be poorly developed in other stages.

These are the permanent stages and there is no turning back. Yet, before a person attains to this stage, he will experience them as mere passing states. He may experience peak situations in which he feels very excited. After some time, he will know how to convert these passing states into permanent stages. However, this does not mean that one will always know their areas of strengths as well as areas of weaknesses.

Multiple intelligences such as moral, aesthetic, cognitive and interpersonal are referred to as developmental lines. This is because they prove that there are growth and development and these will manifest themselves in progressive stages.

Choose Your Degree Programs Carefully

Choosing a career in psychology requires a lot of research. One has to do the necessary research to find the best program that best matches his career goals. He also needs to ensure that the program has been accredited. This is important in ensuring that the graduate will be recognized as a certified health practitioner and he can carry in with his practice with peace of mind. There is also the issue of the amount of tuition fees. It is only reasonable to choose a college or university which is affordable. However, if this is not possible, there are various funding options such as loans, grants, and scholarships that a person can look into for further financial assistance.
